LYNCHBURG, Va. – Randolph-Macon outscored Lynchburg 12-5 over the final four minutes to claim an 81-72 victory in ODAC men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Turner Gymnasium.
Junior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) paced the victors with 20 points, going 5 for 8 from the floor, 3 for 5 on three-pointers and a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw line. He scored 10 points over the final eight minutes to help the Yellow Jackets (9-4, 3-1) seal the win.
Junior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) added 16, while senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville) put in 13 and junior Trent Walker (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) chipped in 11 off the bench.
The Yellow Jackets (9-4, 3-1) led by as many as 12 early in the second half before a 22-9 run by the Hornets (9-4, 2-2) put Lynchburg ahead 54-53. Walker had a layup with 6:50 remaining to give R-MC the lead for good at 61-60. The Yellow Jackets led 69-67 with four minutes left before a 9-1 spurt put the visitors back in control. Walker hit a 15-foot jumper with the shot clock winding down at the 2:43 mark to make it 73-67. Junior Evan Jackson (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) sank a 10-footer with 1:52 remaining, again with the shot clock approaching zero, to give R-MC a 75-67 advantage. The Yellow Jackets hit 6 of 10 free throws over the final 1:16 to secure the win.
The Yellow Jackets put together an 11-4 run to take a 16-8 lead eight minutes into the contest. The advantage shrunk to three at 19-16 before an 11-4 spurt gave R-MC its largest lead at 30-20 with 4:20 remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets eventually took a 39-30 edge to the locker room at intermission. Simon put up 10 points in the period, while Badger added nine for the visitors. The R-MC defense forced 12 Hornet turnovers, while Lynchburg hit just 4 of 10 free throws in the first half.
R-MC returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 15 for an 8 p.m. ODAC contest at Shenandoah.
