Guilford Holds Off Bridgewater, 69-60

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Guilford College outscored Bridgewater 21-11 in the final 8:35 of the game Saturday afternoon to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 69-60, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball action.

With the victory the Quakers remain the only team in the ODAC without a blemish on their conference record. Guilford is now 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC. Bridgewater drops to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The Eagles got off to a quick start, bolting to a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes. Ronnie Thomas hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring and a layup by Ed Reddick made the score 5-0. After Guilford's Zeb Richardson made two foul shots, Tavis Stapleton hit a jumper and Zach Hunter scored on a driving layup for a 9-2 Eagles lead.

Guilford then ran off the next 12 points with a 3-pointer by Trever Hyatt capping the run and giving the Quakers a 12-9 lead.

The Eagles knotted the score at 12-12 on two free throws by Hunter and then regained the lead on a layup by David Larson.

After Guilford's Jake Hopkins tied the lead with a short jumper, Stapleton and Kyle Welty knocked down jumpers to put the Eagles on top 18-14 with 8:35 left in the opening half.

Bridgewater's methodically padded its lead and a 5-0 run gave Bridgewater its biggest lead of the half.

With the Eagles on top 23-19, Kenneth Waugh hit 1-of-2 foul shots and Thomas followed with two at the line, making the score 26-19. Daniel McClain then knocked down a 12-footer, giving the Eagles a 28-19 lead with 3:47 left in the half.

Guilford responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to two. Hopkins scored five straight points and Richardson added two foul shots, making the score 26-26.

Bridgewater's Hunter hit a runner in the lane just before the buzzer to send the Eagles to the locker room with a 30-26 halftime lead.

Guilford took its first lead of the second half on a layup by Richardson, but Stapleton answered with four straight points to put the Eagles on top 40-37 with 15:42 left to play.

A 3-pointer by Hunter pushed the lead to six, but Guilford reeled off an 11-0 run to lead 48-43 with 10:54 remaining.

Two buckets by Reddick and a layup by Welty gave the Eagles a 49-48 lead before the Quakers regained the lead for good on a short jumper by Robbie Stokely with 8:35 left.

McCarthy and Thomas traded 3-pointers before a layup by Hopkins put the Guilford lead at three, 55-52. A dunk by Larson cut the margin to one before another 3-pointer by McCarthy made the score 58-54 with 5:50 left on the clock.

A jumper by Stapleton made it a two-point game with 3:24 left, but the Quakers scored the next seven points to take a 65-58 lead with just 1:22 remaining.

Reddick, Stapleton and Thomas each finished the game with 12 points for the Eagles. McCarthy scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Quakers attack. Richardson scored 15 and Hopkins added 11.

Guilford held a 40-35 edge on the glass with Hopkins snagging 14 rebounds and Richardson pulling down 10 as both players completed a double-double. For the Eagles, Reddick McClain and Stapleton pulled down seven boards each.

The difference came at the offensive end in the second half as the Quakers made 56 percent of their shots while the Eagles connected on just 35.5 percent.
