NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University got up 11-1 in the early going and maintained the lead throughout, picking up a 69-59 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball win over the University of New England on Thursday evening (Jan. 9) at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

The Seahawks improve to 9-3 overall (4-1 CCC) with the triumph. Big Blue drops to 1-11 on the season (1-4 CCC).

Barrett Hanlon led the way with 18 points, five assists, and three steals. Jeff Bielefeld posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Patrick Dinneen drained half of his four treys in the opening moments, and finished with 14 points. As a team, SRU connected on 47.4 percent (9 for 19) of its shots from behind the three-point arc.

UNE received a game-high 22 points from first-year Justin Pollard, who registered 13 of his points on 15 shots at the free throw stripe. Senior Joshua Butler added 11 points, as did first-year Brayden Morse, who also grabbed a team-best nine boards.

The Nor'easters countered the start by Salve Regina with a 7-1 spurt to draw within 12-8 a little more than five minutes into the contest, but the hosts slowly built the margin to its highest (19 at 41-22) by halftime.

Bielefeld, Hanlon, and Dinneen combined to make 11-of-18 field goal attempts in the period, as the Seahawks made 52 percent of their shots from the floor.

Trailing 54-36 approaching the midway mark of the 2nd half, UNE strung together a 12-1 run in a span of 2:22 to reduce the deficit into single digits (55-48). Pollard tallied eight points in the middle of the stretch.

But despite cutting the difference down to seven on four more occasions, Big Blue could not get any closer the rest of the way.

The Nor'easters return home to face Nichols College on Saturday (3 p.m.).
