Top-ranked Pointers edge their way past UW-Stout, 61-60

MENOMONIE (January 8, 2014) - UW-Stout overcame an early deficit, held the lead or were tied for all but three minutes over the final 33 minutes of the contest, held No. 1 ranked UW-Stevens Point to their lowest point total of the season and 19 points under their season average, but the Pointer ultimately took the victory, 61-60, Wednesday, at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The game was tied seven times in the second half of play and Stevens Point (12-0, 4-0 WIAC) had leads only at 17:39, 13:07, 10:40 and finally, the one that really counts, with 16 second remaining.

The teams traded timeouts in the final 2-minutes, 30-seconds of the game. Stout's Alex Oman (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn) hit a pair of free throws at 2:30 to break the seventh tie of the game, 57-55. The Pointers' Tyler Tillema hit two charity shots at 2:18 to tie the game, and Oman answered back with at 1:49 to take a 59-57 lead. The Pointers' Trevor Hass put the game into it's ninth and final tie of the game at 1:28. Oman made one of two throws at 1:04 to give Stout a 60-59 lead, their final lead of the night.

The Pointers' Tillema connected on the only field goal, a turnaround jumper, down the final stretch with 16.2 seconds remaining. Oman came up short on a 3-pointer and Stevens Point got the rebound when the ball went out of bounds. Hass was fouled with seconds left, but missed both throws. Oman pulled down the rebound with less than two seconds remaining, but his Hail Mary fell far short.

The Pointers led the first seven minuts of the game, but Stout (8-5, 3-2 WIAC) tied the score at 9-9 seven minutes into the first half. The Pointers would not regain the lead until Tillema hit a 3-pointer at 17:39 in the second half.

Oman led all scorers with 20 points. Brett Ahsenmacher (Fr, Annandale, Minn) finished with 12 points.Stout shot 52.6 percent (20-38) from the floor, 50 percent (9-18) from 3-point range and 68.8 percent (11-16) from the line.

Hass led the Pointers with 19 points, followed by Tillema with 17. Joe Ritchay finished with 12 points. The Pointers shot 47.9 percent (23-48) from the floor, 50 percent (7-14) from beyond the arc and 53.3 percent (8-15) from the line.

Both teams recorded 24 rebounds. Tillema led the Pointers with five. Oman led Stout with six.

Stout will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m.
