NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Eric Selby matched his career-high with 20 points to lead the 16th-ranked Wesley College men's basketball team to an impressive, 64-46 victory over No. 14 Christopher Newport on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center. The Wolverines are now 10-1 on the season while the Captains fall to 10-2 and both teams now have an identical 3-1 record in the Capital Athletic Conference.

A senior from Wilmington, Del., Selby, who is normally the primary distributer of the basketball, made 7-of-10 shots from the floor, including one three, and sunk five free throws to lead all scorers. Fellow senior David Langan once again notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. AJ Tilghman was also in double figures with ten points off the bench.

The trio of Wayne Lennon, Brandin Youngblood and Quincy Pettiford also chipped in from their starting spots, combining for 19 points while Lennon also grabbed ten rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.

More impressive was the Wesley defense that held Christopher Newport to just 27.6% shooting from floor. The Wolverines were also the aggressor on offense, making 20-of-27 shots from the charity stripe as CNU went to the line just 16 times and converted on half of them.

Christopher Newport led briefly with a pair of free throws to start the contest and the teams battled for position for the first several minutes. With an 8-6 lead, Langan tipped in a missed jumper by Pettiford to increase the lead to four points, starting a 13-5 Wesley run.

The Wolverines would increase their lead to as many as 13 points in the first half as Selby scored seven points in the final five minutes of the period to give Wesley a 34-22 lead at the break. Selby also had a hand in the first three baskets in the second half with a bucket and two assists to increase the lead to 41-22.  Wesley would increase the lead to as many as 22 points to run away from the Captains.

Wesley plays its second-straight ranked conference opponent when it hosts #17 Mary Washington on Saturday, January 11, at 3 pm.
