More news about: Wilmington

TIFFIN - It was the epitome of unselfishness Saturday as the Wilmington College men's basketball team assisted on 22 of their 32 baskets in beating Heidelberg, 99-89, at Seiberling Gymnasium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

"We played well offensively, and we really shared the ball," said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. "We made the extra pass, and its obvious when you have 22 assists."

Wilmington improved to 6-4 overall, 3-1 in the OAC, while the Student Princes fell to 4-7 overall, 0-4 in the OAC.

Senior Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) and junior R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) combined for 44 points and 17 rebounds in the victory. Heard recorded his third double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 boards. He has reached double figures in eight consecutive games and reached at least 20 points for the fifth time this season.

Leppert reached double digits for the eighth time, and the sixth time in seven games, tallying 21 points with six rebounds.

"Both guys played well, and we expect them to play at a high level every night," said Hunt. "They definitely had it going offensively, and it was fun to see."

After trailing by nine points midway through the first half, the Fightin' Quakers picked up its defensive efforts and chipped away at its deficit. Five different players found the scoresheet during a 16-6 run over a seven-minute stretch that gave WC its first lead since its led 1-0.

"We played well in spurts," said Hunt. "When we played well with defensive urgency, flying around and taking away the three-point shots, we were very good. And that is what we did during that run. Unfortunately, we didn't do it more. Giving up 89 points is disappointing, but anytime you can get a road win - it's a good win."

Senior Klarke Ransome (Richwood, OH/North Union) distributed a team-high seven assists with 10 points, and Taylor Wellman (Norwood, OH/Norwood) added 10 points for the Fightin' Quakers.
