Saints Fall, 83-80, to Hope in Coach Connor Classic

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 83-80, to Hope College tonight (Tuesday, December 31, 2013) in the final game of the 2013 Coach Connor Classic at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 2-9 and with the win, the Dutchmen improve to 5-5.

Hope raced out to a 35-23 lead with 5:08 to play in the first half when Ben Gardner made a lay-up. Thomas More answered with a 14-6 run to cut the lead to 41-37 when junior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) made one-of-two free-throws with 16-seconds to play in the half. The Dutchmen closed out the half on a 4-0 run to take a 45-37 lead at halftime when Brock Benson made a lay-up with one-second to play in the half.

The Saints opened the second half on a 21-5 run to take a 58-50 lead with 11:27 to play in the game when freshman guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) converted an old fashion three-point play. Hope used a 21-9 lead to take a 71-67 lead on an Alex Eidson lay-up with 5:03 to play in the game. Thomas More answered with a 13-8 run to take an 80-79 lead with 1:13 to play in the game when junior forward Chris Richard (Louisville, Ky./Southern) made a lay-up. Hope scored the final four points of the game to win, 83-80.

Thomas More shot 52.4 percent from the field and forced 17 Hope turnovers.

Senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) led all scorers with 20 points, while he was joined in double-figures by junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) with 17 points, McGovney with 15 and Richard with 12. Senior forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) led the team on the boards with four rebounds, while senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) led the team in assists with five and steals with two.

The Saints return to action on Saturday (January 4) when they travel to Washington, Pennsylvania to play Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
