ONEONTA, N.Y.—In a non-conference men's basketball contest that featured two D3hoops.com preseason All-Americans, fourth team selection Richie Bonney led Hobart to a 78-72 victory over second team pick Jared Suderley and Hartwick in Lambros Arena this afternoon. Bonney led the Statesmen in scoring and matched his career-highs for rebounds, assists, and blocked shots.
Bonney was 8-of-17 shooting and logged 18 points. He pulled down a game-high 19 boards, matching his career-high set in the NCAA tournament against nationally ranked Rhode Island College last season. Hobart controlled the glass this afternoon 44-31. Bonney also handed out four assists and blocked a game-high four shots.
Suderley produced 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting, 12 rebounds, and three blocked shots.
A close game from start to finish, neither team led by more than eight points (Hobart 26-18 with 6:25 left in 1st half) as the lead changed hands 10 times before the final horn sounded. The final lead change came with 6:27 left in the second half. Joey Lufkin's jumper put the Hawks in front 63-62, but Joe Gibbons countered with a layup for the Statesmen to reclaim the lead. His bucket was the start of a seven-point surge that put Hobart ahead 69-63 thanks to a Trey Blanding 3-pointer and a layup by Bonney.
Hartwick (4-5) cut its deficit to just two twice in the final four minutes but couldn't move back in front. Anthony Keane sank a pair of free throws with 1:51 left to make it 74-72. Over the next 60 seconds, the Hawks missed a pair of layups and a jumper that would have tied the game.
Hobart (5-2) didn't help itself during that stretch, missing three free throws before Connor Rehbaum connected twice from the chairty stripe to add some breathing room with 38 seconds remaining. The junior scored all of his 16 points in the second half. The Statesmen made two more free throws down the stretch as the Hawks misfired on three 3-point tries.
Hobart shot 47 percent from the floor for the game, including 54.8 percent in the second half. The Statesmen were 8-of-20 from 3-point range and 8-of-14 at the line. Hartwick shot 42.4 percent, including 6-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Hawks earned 21 trips to the line, making 16.
Andrew Hoy carried Hobart to a 36-30 halftime lead, scoring all of his career-high 16 points before the intermission. He made his first two jumpers of the night and then missed a 3-point try. Unfazed, Hoy rebounded with four straight makes from 3-point land, a career-high. The senior also contributed a career-high seven rebounds in the contest.
Gibbons had 10 points in the first half and finished the game with 14 points and seven boards. He needs just 28 points to raise his career total to 1,000. Blanding contributed eight points and a team-high five assists.
Kyle Bradley paced the Hawks with a game-high 24 points and a game-high five steals. Matt Petruccione added 12 points, while Lufkin finished with nine points and a game-high seven assists.
Hobart will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 2, when the Statesmen face Delaware Valley at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the Sponaugle New Year Tournament at Franklin & Marshall.
