TAMPA BAY, Fla. (December 30, 2013) – In today's third place game of the Tampa Bay Shootout the Drew University men's basketball team defeated Regis College (Mass.), 70-63. The Rangers even their overall season record to 5-5 while Regis drops to 2-8.
The Rangers were led by a trio of double digit scorers on the afternoon. Sophomore Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) and senior John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) each had 18 points. The duo combined for eight of the season-high nine Drew three-pointers while Klinger led the team with five assists. After a career high of 20 points in yesterday's game, sophomore Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Drew put together a stellar second half after going into the break trailing, 27-25. The Rangers outscored the Pride 45-36 over the final 20 minutes. The score was tied a total of eight times in the second half before the Rangers took the lead for good with 5:09 remaining on a Klinger three-pointer. Neither team held a lead larger than four until Drew went on a 9-2 beginning at the 4:38 mark. The Rangers found themselves up 67-58, the largest lead of the contest. The lead proved to be too much as Regis never got closer than six for the remainder of the game.
The Rangers shot a season-high 50 percent from the field, making 25-of-50 attempts. Drew also denied a season-best, seven shots including three blocks from Kevin-Michael Miller (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls). The Rangers are second in the Landmark Conference with 47 blocks this season.
Before returning home on January 11th to take on conference-foe Susquehanna, the Rangers will be on the road to take on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday at 7:30 p.m and Bryn Athyn on January 7that 8:00 p.m.
