UW-L Falls at NCAA II Southwest Minnesota State

Marshall, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 83-57 at Southwest Minnesota State University Thursday night at the Recreation/Athletic Facility.  The Eagles drop to 7-2 on the season as they had their four-game winning streak snapped.  The Mustangs, a member of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, improves to 6-5 on the year.

In the first meeting between the teams since the 1989-90 season, Southwest Minnesota State led 17-12 with 14:27 remaining in the first half when UW-L's Braden Tice hit a three-pointer to cut the advantage to 17-15.  A jumper by the Mustangs' Nick Smith gave Southwest Minnesota State a 19-15 lead, but the Eagles tied the game on a Lucas Collom layup and Luke Tweed jumper.  The teams traded baskets to make it 21-21 with 10:59 remaining.

Vinard Birch gave the Mustangs a 23-21 lead on a jumper with 10:44 left in the half, but the Eagles took their first lead of the contest at 24-23 on Calahan Skogman's three-point field goal with 10:26 remaining. Southwest Minnesota State then used a 18-4 run to lead 41-28 with 3:37 remaining.  The Mustangs led 47-34 at halftime.

UW-L cut Southwest Minnesota State's lead to seven twice in the second half, including 55-48 with 13:35 remaining after a Tweed jumper.  The Mustangs then scored the next six points to lead 61-48.  The Eagles could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.

UW-L shot 40.7% from the field, including 26.1% (six-of-23) from three-point range, and 63.6% (seven-of-11) at the line.

Tweed led the Eagles with 17 points while Skogman finished with 12 and Tice totaled 11.  Skogman had a team-high seven rebounds.

Southwest Minnesota State shot 62.3% from the field, including 41.7% (five-of-12) from three-point range, and 66.7% (12-of-18) at the line.

Smith led the Mustangs with 21 points while Shaun Condon and William Giddings each had 12.  Mitch Weg finished with a game-high eight rebounds.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, December 28 versus 13th-ranked Augustana College (Ill.) at JustaGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
