Oxy Loses Overtime Thriller to Pacific

LOS ANGELES — Spencer Levy scored 23 points — including a string of clutch jumpers and free throws near the end of regulation to put Oxy up by three.

But Pacific's Jordan Batey made three free throws after being fouled on a three-pointer with 7 seconds left and the Occidental College men's basketball team narrowly missed beating a good Boxer team in a 71-70 overtime loss at Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Oxy falls to 3-3 overall. Pacific improves to 6-2, knocking off its fourth SCIAC team of the season. The Boxers have already beaten Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer — the two teams expected to be favorites in the SCIAC this year.

Kory Hamane and Kris Montoya both had looks to win the game on Oxy's last possession in overtime. Hamane took a kick-out from Montoya and front-rimmed a 21-footer from the left wing with 5 seconds left. Montoya grabbed the offensive rebound amid a scrum under the basket, but couldn't connect.

The Tigers last chance with 0.7 seconds left on a inbounds pass underneath the basket, was deflected as time expired.

Levy was on from the outside, going 4 of 8 from the three-point line. Oxy's biggest three though came from Jay Miller to put Oxy up 61-60 with 2 minutes left in regulation.

Montoya added 20, Ty Cobb chipped in eight and Andrew Johnson had six for Oxy.

Juwan Rice had his third game with double-digit boards, finishing with 10 rebounds and six points.

Daniel Zitani led Pacific with 23 points and 12 rebounds

The Boxers scored the first four points of OT and were able to hold the lead.

The Tigers play a pair of non-conference neutral site games at Chapman this weekend. Oxy faces Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) at 4 p.m. on Dec. 21 and UC Santa Cruz at 4 p.m. on Dec. 22.
