Perkins Hits Game Winner as La Roche Overcomes 16 Point Second Half Deficit

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche men's basketball (6-3) overcame a 16 point second half deficit to upend Carnegie Mellon (5-2) 73-72 in non-conference action on Wednesday at the Kerr Fitness Center.

The Redhawks held Carnegie Mellon scoreless for the opening six minutes of the first half but the visiting Spartans entered intermission with 32-27 lead. Neal McKown paced the home squad with 9 first half points while David Jackson pulled down 6 boards.

The Tartans came out of halftime on a roll and led by 16 points with 3:45 left before the Redhawks stormed back. La Roche's tough team defense sparked the run and a pair of long threes got the Redhawks within two points with 10 seconds left.

La Roche fouled Carnegie Mellon's Christian Manoli who missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and gave the Redhawks a chance. Andre Flanigan came down with the board and drove the length of the floor before finding Lionel Perkins in the corner for a wide open three.

The seniors came up big in the victory including Flanigan who led all scorers with 19 points. Perkins contributed 14 points and hit a trio of three pointers while McKown and Daron Tabron tallied 11 points. Zaire Redding registered 10 points and 6 rebounds in the win.

The Redhawks outrebounded Carnegie Mellon 44-40 including 19-13 in the second half.

La Roche men's basketball will travel to NCAA D1 Cleveland State on Monday Night. The Redhawks last played Cleveland State in 2008.
