UNION (NJ) – Kean University scored the first 17 points of the second half as the Cougars raced to an 83-52 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in a non-conference game.
Kean improved to 5-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Aggies dropped their second straight to fall to 5-4. It's their first multiple-game losing streak since January of last season and it was after that short skid that the team went on a school-record nine-game winning streak. They eventually won 11 of their last 13 including two in the postseason to capture their second Freedom Conference championship in three years.
The Cougars used an early 9-0 run to take command of the game, but Delaware Valley pulled to within single digits, 34-25, as Francis Arnold drained a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer.
However, it was all Kean after that as the trio of Michael Burton, Ali Mix and Tommy Soulias scored 15 of the team's 17 points in the first five minutes of the second half as the lead jumped to 51-25. The Cougars led by as many as 36 as they shot 57.7 percent from the field in the second half and limited the Aggies to 27.5 percent shooting over the entire contest.
Burton and Mix combined to shoot 15-for-26 from the field as Burton finished with 22 points and Mix had 20. Soulias added 12 points.
Arnold was the lone Delaware Valley to hit double figures in scoring as he netted 15 points. Nick Sullivan hit three treys and had nine points while Daron Waller came off the bench to score eight points.
