Brooklyn Drops CUNYAC Opener Against CSI

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team dropped its 2013-2014 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opener on Friday night against the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, by a score of 77-58.

With the loss, BC falls to 2-4 overall on the year and 0-1 in CUNYAC play, while CSI improves to 3-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in the conference.

The Dolphins used a hot shooting hand to claim the win, going 31-for-57 (54.4%) from the field. CSI also controlled the paint, out-rebounding the Bulldogs by a margin of 57-36 and outscoring Brooklyn 42-20 in the paint.

Following a three-pointer from junior guard Jai Kellman that gave BC its first and only lead, 5-4, at the 17:09 mark of the opening half, Staten Island rattled off nine straight points to go up by eight, 13-5, with 14:11 left before the break.

The Dolphins would never trail in the game again, eventually going ahead by 22, 33-11 (5:22), en route to taking an 18-point halftime lead, 42-24.

The Bulldogs would be unable to recover from its halftime deficit, as the visiting Dolphins would maintain its double digit advantage throughout the rest of the game. CSI would eventually go on to take home the 77-58 win.

BC shot 29.7% (22-for-74) from the field for the game.

Kellman and sophomore backcourt partner Jamel Gist finished the game with 18 points apiece to lead the Bulldogs. Junior Valon Djombalic grabbed eight rebounds, to go with six points.

CSI had four players score in double figures, led by Javon Cox's game-high 22 points. Cox also grabbed a game-best 15 rebounds to collect the double-double. Fankie Schettino added 13 points, while Dylan Bulger chipped in with 12 points and Matt Van Manen finished with 10 points.

Brooklyn will be back in action this Tuesday, December 10th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Jamaica, NY to take on the Cardinals of York College in another CUNYAC matchup. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 pm start time.
