#8 Warhawks Fall to #1 Pointers

Whitewater had the upper hand in the early going, fashioning a 9-5 lead on Reggie Hearn (Milwaukee/Marshall)'s layin at 15:35. Eric Bryson(Elkhorn/Elkhorn)'s layup with 12:26 on the clock gave UW-W its final lead, 13-12.

The Pointers blew past the Warhawks with a 22-0 run over the next eight plus minutes, ending with UW-SP in front 34-13. Six different Pointers scored in the run. UW-SP went 9-12 from the floor and 5-5 from the line during the streak.

Stevens Point took a 42-22 lead into halftime. The Pointers not only shot better from the floor, 54% to 35%, but had more field goals made, 15-7. UW-SP had a 21-10 advantage on the boards in the first twenty minutes. Point's junior forward Alex Richard led both teams with ten points, while senior guard Eric Bryson (Elkhorn/Elkhorn) led the Warhawks with eight.

Whitewater started the second half with a streak of its own, using a 10-0 burst to pull within ten, 42-32 on Quardell Young(Kenosha/Bradford)'s three point play.

If you believe that "turnabout is fair play", the Pointers replied with a 10-1 run capped by Tyler Tillema's jumper at 14:30 to increase the margin back to 52-33 UW-SP.

Seesawing back again, K.J. Evans capped a 10-0 string for Whitewater to bring the Warhawks within 52-43 with 12:06 left in the game.

Whitewater got the margin to eight, 75-67, on Patrick Souter (Racine/St. Catherine's)'s three pointer with 1:15 remaining.

Point cooled off a bit in the second half, shooting 50% from the floor in the game, and the Warhawks regained their shooting eye, bringing their accuracy up to 45%. Whitewater made 4-17 from three point range, while the Pointers went 12-23. UW-W had the edge at the free throw line, making 21-29, while Point hit 15-23. UW-SP won the battle on the glass 35-26, while the Warhawks had fewer turnovers 10-14.

Evans led UW-W with 24 points and seven rebounds while Young had 12 points. Young added team highs with 3 steals and 3 assists and Bryson added 10 points. The Pointers were led by Trevor Haas, who made 6-10 three pointers. Tillema chipped in with 17 and seven rebounds. Austin Ryf chipped in with 11 points and five assists, and Richard finished with the ten points he scored in the first half.
