Staten Island Rallies Past Montclair State, 77-73

Montclair, NJ – Senior center Dylan Bulger (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) scored 24 points, including 13 in the second half as College of Staten Island rallied from a nine-point deficit for a 77-73 win over Montclair State at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Bulger posted a double-double with 15 rebounds and scored 13 points in the second half as the Dolphins (4-2) rallied back from a 47-38 halftime deficit to post its second win over the Red Hawks this season. CSI, which defeated MSU for just the sixth time in 20 meetings, registered a 61-56 win over Montclair in the third-place game of the Hampton Inn South Tournament at Mary Washington University last month.

Sophomore Kevin McGorry (Rutherford, NJ, Rutherford) scored a career-best 24 points while senior guard Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune)added 23 for MSU (2-5), which dropped its third straight game.

Singleton and McGorry combined for 32 of Montclair's 47 points in the opening half as the Red Hawks led for just about the entire half with the exception of a couple of ties. The last of those came at 22-22 when James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ, West Morris Central) sank a pair of free throws to put Montclair back in front. Singleton followed with a layup D'Angelo would hit again from the line making the score 29-24 with 7:07 left.

A jumper by Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) gave the Red Hawks a 37-29 and a layup by Singleton just ahead of the halftime buzzer gave MSU a 47-38 lead heading into the locker room.

In the second half, the Red Hawks got a basket by Erick Lofton-Harris (Union, NJ, Union) for a 49-40 lead with 18 minutes remaining however the Dolphins outscored Montclair 19-8 over the next nine minutes taking the lead on a layup by Matt Van Manen (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) with 9:07 to go.

The teams would be deadlocked twice more before a  three-point play by Will Fonseca (Staten Island, NY / Susan Wagner) put CSI in front for good at 66-63 with 6:07 left.  The Red Hawks would get within a point on two occasions the last coming with 1:41 remaining as McGorry scored on a layup.

MSU would get the ball back but turned the ball over with 37 seconds as the Dolphins' Kevin King (Cornwall, NY / Cornwall Central) hit two foul shots to a 73-70 lead. Bulger would grab a rebound on the next possession and was fouled. He hit two more free throws extending the lead to five points with 18 seconds left.

McGorry drained a three from the right side with six seconds to go bringing MSU within 75-73 however Bulger iced the game for Staten Island with a pair of free throws.

Fonesca finished with 17 points for CSI, which got 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds from Frankie Schettino (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic).

Goldson had nine points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for MSU, which shot 9-of-31 (29 percent) in the second half. Lofton-Harris chipped in with seven points and four assists.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, December 14 when it hosts William Paterson University at 1:00 pm.
