LeTourneau Loses to Centenary, 68-56

A 14-5 spurt midway through the first half propelled visiting Centenary College to a 68-56 win over the LeTourneau University men's basketball team on Monday night at Solheim Arena.

The YellowJackets (1-3) were led by senior Justin Jones, who had his second double double of the young season with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

The Gents (3-1) landed three in double figures with Jonathan Blount scoring a team-high 16 points to lead Centenary. He was joined in double digits by Donovan Williams and Brooks Pawsat, who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

LeTourneau started the game on a 15-4 run in the opening 5:47 of the contest. In the opening spurt, eight came from Jones and seven more from senior Chad Williams to put the home team ahead. Then, Centenary's Blount hit his first of three 3-pointers to spark a run by the visitors with 13:29 to play in the first 20 minutes.

Centenary went on a 13-2 run, culminating with a tip-in by Caden Cheramie that cut the deficit to 19-17 with 10:14 to play in the half. LeTourneau remained in front until Pawsat hit a 3 pointer that put the visitors up 23-22 with 5:47 to go in the half. After taking the lead, they never relinquished it. The YellowJackets would only get as close as seven for the rest of the contest.

For LeTourneau, Jones was joined in double figures by sophomore Ladaria Brown and Williams, who had 14 and 11 points, respectively. Brown has been in double figures in all four games in 2013-14. Junior guard Jake Kennedy dished out a career-high six assists in the loss.

Centenary outscored LeTourneau, 25-6 in points off the bench and 32-18 in points in the paint for the win.

The YellowJackets will regroup and turn its sights back on the American Southwest Conference play on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Louisiana College for StarWars and Zumba night at Solheim Arena. Fans are encouraged to dress up as their favorite StarWars character and at halftime of the men's basketball game; LeTourneau will host a Texas-sized Zumba class under the direction of LETU senior Kayla Bonina.
