CORTLAND, N.Y. – Mike Mitchell (Milford, NH) scored 20 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining, as Plattsburgh edged Cortland, 64-61, in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC championship game.

The Cardinals, who lost at Cortland 75-61 in last year's conference finals, are now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. Cortland suffered its first loss of the season and is now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.

Mitchell finished 6-of-8 from the floor, all from 3-point range, and 2-of-2 from the foul line. Shamoy McIntosh (Floral Park) added 12 points, nine rebounds and four steals, as well as a blocked shot with less than 30 seconds left to preserve Plattsburgh's lead. Shavar Fields (Albany/Bishop Maginn) also grabbed nine rebounds

Junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) led Cortland with 21 points, five assists and four steals. He hit 7-of-14 shots overall and 4-of-8 from the 3-point arc. Senior Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) finished with 12 points and senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) registered 10 points, 16 rebounds, three blocked shots, three assists and two steals.

Cortland led 33-31 in a first half that featured seven ties. The Red Dragons held the largest lead for either team at six points on two occasions in the second half – at 39-33 with 16:46 left and at 56-50 on a Herron layup with 5:35 remaining.

Plattsburgh scored the next nine points on a Mitchell trey, a McIntosh jumper, a John Perez (Haverstraw/North Rockland) layup and two Edward Correa (Bronx/Mount St. Michael) free throws to take a 59-56 lead with 2:40 left. Herron buried a 3-pointer with 2:18 left to force the game's 12th and final tie at 59-59. After the teams traded possessions, McMahon hit a short jumper in the lane with 1:18 remaining to put Cortland ahead, 61-59.

Mitchell's long 3-pointer with less than 45 seconds left gave Plattsburgh the lead by one. Cortland worked the ball on its next trip down the floor and Spendjian had a look at an apparent wide-open layup, but McIntosh recovered and blocked the shot to keep Plattsburgh ahead. Mitchell made two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to put the Cardinals up by three. Cortland turned the ball over on its next possession, but Plattsburgh missed two foul shots to keep the Red Dragons alive. A final potential tying trey by Herron, however, fell short just before the buzzer sounded.

Cortland will host SUNYIT on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. in a non-league matchup.
