PAXTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College ended the first half on a 14-0 run to take a nine-point lead into the break of their Great Northeast Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game against Anna Maria on Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Amcats, who managed just 25 points before halftime, more than doubled that in the second half alone en route to a 77-55 victory, dropping Mount Ida to 2-6 (0-2 GNAC).
Sophomore Cam Walker (New Bedford, Mass.) led the Mustangs with 15 points and four steals, as well as two blocks and five rebounds.
Junior Treace Macklin (Brockton, Mass.) was the only other Mustang in double-figures, netting 14 points and hitting one of the Mustang's three 3-pointers.
The other two came from freshman Jahari Wright (Austin, Texas), who scored eight points, as did senior Kenny Jean (Dorchester, Mass.), who led the Mustangs with eight rebounds.
Quantez Franklin (South Yarmouth, Mass.) led all players with 18 points, and he was joined in double-figures by Amcats teammates Tyler Delorey (Worcester, Mass.), who netted 15, and Joseph Barillo (Dania Beach, Fla.), who had 14 points.
After their run to end the first half, Mount Ida still led 38-34 three and a half minutes into the second period, but a 13-4 spurt by the Amcats, capped by five straight points from Barillo, helped the hosts open up a lead.
Macklin answered with a three-pointer and Walker made a layup to pull the Mustangs back within a pair but Anna Maria closed the game over the final nine minutes by outscoring the Mustangs 28-8.
Rebounding numbers were down for both teams, as the hosts had a 32-29 advantage, led by 10 boards from Kyle McKissick (Charlton, Mass.).
Anna Maria shot 63% from the field in the second half (19-30) while Mount Ida were just 6-for-23 (26%) from the floor after hitting half of their shots in the first half.
Four players on the Mustangs had two assists, including Macklin, Tyree Singletary (Newark, N.J.), Nathan Bueno (Methuen, Mass.) and Michael Joseph (Windsor, Conn.).
Hugh Daye (Worcester, Mass.) led Anna Maria with four assists and had five steals, while Delorey had seven steals and Franklin swatted a pair of shots.
Mount Ida finishes their 2013 schedule with another road game in the GNAC on Tuesday night, when the Mustangs travel to Emmanuel for a 7:00 pm affair.
The Amcats (2-4, 1-0 GNAC) have two games left this year, starting on Monday when they host conference foe Rivier at 7:00 pm.
