Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team dropped its fifth straight decision on Wednesday night, falling to #25 Purchase by a score of 69-53. The Dolphins had a pair of players score in double-figures on the night, led by 19 points from Brandon Serrano (Hempstead, N.Y.).
Mount Saint Vincent scored five of the first seven points in the tilt on Wednesday, with a three-pointer from Serrano 1:20 into the contest pushing the Dolphins in front 5-2. The Panthers answered with a quick 9-0 run covering 4:29 to gain an 11-5 advantage on a Joel Neri bucket at the 14:11 mark.
The Dolphins would knot the score at 11-11 on a Fraser conversion at 12:22 and would retake the lead at 16-15 on a Jesse Regina (Staten Island, N.Y.) jumper with 8:31 remaining before halftime.
The visiting Panthers answered again with a 15-7 spurt to jump in front by seven on a Troy Singleton three-pointer in the final half minute of the first period, before Christian Giles (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) knocked in a pair of free-throws to get the Mount back to within 30-25 heading into the intermission.
The Dolphins held Purchase to 31.3-percent shooting in the opening stanza, including a 2-for-11 mark from distance. The Panthers built the halftime advantage with a 14-4 edge in paint points and an 8-2 advantage in points off of turnovers. Singleton led the Panthers with eight points at the break, with Serrano leading the Mount with seven tallies.
Mount Saint Vincent came out of the break and scored the first six points of the second half, including a triple from Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.), to climb in front 31-30 with 17:27 left in regulation.
Following a Brandon Serrano jumper at the 17:27 mark, Mount Saint Vincent would score just four points over the next 10:53 of the contest. Purchase would take advantage with a 23-4 run to pull in front 57-35 on a pair of Justin Person free-throws with 6:34 left in the half. Mount Saint Vincent went 1-for-13 from the field over that stretch, while the Panthers converted on six of its 11 chances. Neri led the way with eight points over the run for Purchase.
The Panthers shot just under 48-percent from the floor in the second half and knocked in four three-pointers to build its lead. Neri and Andre Nixon each scored 10 points after the break to lead Purchase.
Purchase placed four players in double-figures on the night, led by 16 from Neri on 6-for-10 shooting. He also blocked three shots and secured six rebounds. Nixon and Singleton each finished with 14 points, while David Haughton led the Panthers with seven rebounds.
The Dolphins got a game-high 19 points from Serrano on 7-for-17 shooting overall and 10 from Fraser who finished 5-for-15 from the field. Fraser led the Mount with eight rebounds, while Giles chipped in with nine points and seven assists. Kevin Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) secured seven rebounds for the Mount on the night.
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent finished 21-for-62 from the floor and 4-for-23 from three-point range. The Dolphins were outscored at the free-throw line 23-7 and in the paint 22-16.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-5 overall on the season and to 0-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be off until December 12 when they welcome Yeshiva to the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Tip-off with the Maccabees is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
