WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team improved to 4-1 this season with a 64-55 victory against visiting York, N.Y. (2-4) Dec. 2.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 13-5 lead less than eight minutes into the contest, but a later 17-4 Pioneer burst put WP ahead by a 23-17 count with 3:11 remaining in the first half. Junior guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) put down 17 first-half points and the Pioneers entered the locker room with a 27-21 edge.
York never seriously threatened during the second period, as William Paterson's lead grew to as many as 15 (46-31, 11:18). When the Cardinals made it a two-possession game at 55-50 with 1:45 remaining, the Pioneers went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line down the stretch to put the game away.
Burgos led all scorers with 32 points, while junior guard Jaques Conceicao (Massama-Lisboa, Portugal/Francais Charle Lepierre) had 10 tallies and a team-best nine rebounds. Senior guard Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) added six points and five assists. WP shot just 38.3 (18-47) percent from the field, but hit on six of its 14 (.429) three-point attempts and went 22-for-30 (.733) at the charity stripe.
Junior guard Omar St. John led the Cardinals with 26 points, and junior forward Jaron Williams notched a double-double with 11 tallies and 10 rebounds.
William Paterson will host Richard Stockton Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 8:00 p.m.
