BRUNSWICK, Maine—Senior Matt Mathias (Baltimore, Md.) led four players in double figures with 15 points, while junior John Swords (Sudbury, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, helping Bowdoin College to a 66-54 victory over visiting Babson College in non-conference men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

With the loss, Babson drops to 4-1 on the year, while Bowdoin moves to 4-0 overall.

Senior Andrew Madlinger (Basking Ridge, N.J.) had 11 points, and classmate Grant White (Springfield, Vt.) chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Polar Bears.

Junior John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) lead the Beavers with 18 points and six rebounds, while classmates Eric Dean (Gilford, N.H.) and David Mack (Holden, Mass.) each added 10 points. Mack also had six rebounds, including five on the offensive end, while senior Kenny Ross (Furlong, Pa.) dished out a game-high six assists.

Babson knocked down four its first six three-pointers, including back-to-back triples from senior Matt Palazini (Franklin, Mass.) and Dean to take a 12-11 lead at the 13:39 mark of the opening half. Bowdoin came right back though, getting a three-pointer from White, followed by hoops from sophomore Lucas Hausman (Westport, Conn.) and Mathias to go in front, 18-12, with 11:33 left in the stanza.

Trailing the Polar Bears by nine following a pair of free throws from Madlinger, five straight points from Mack helped the Beavers get within 29-25 at the 3:46 mark. Bowdoin closed the half with an 11-0 run that included five points from Mathias, and three each from Swords and Madlinger to give the hosts a 40-25 leading heading into the break.

The Polar Bears took their biggest lead of the game at 53-34 following an offensive rebound and put back by Swords with 7:36 to go in the game. Dean tried to keep the Beavers in the game, scoring seven straight points to trim the deficit to 53-41 with 5:29 to go, but Pieri knocked down a jumper, and converted a feed from Mathias to put Bowdoin up 57-41 with 3:29 left.

The Polar Bears shot 11-for-18 from the floor in the second half and shot 60 percent (27-for-45) for the game. Babson struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the second half, shooting just 33 percent (9-for-27) from the floor and 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from behind the arc.

The Green and White held a 28-23 advantage on the glass and pulled down 14 offensive rebounds on the afternoon, but shot just 36.7 percent (18-for-49) from the floor and 53.8 percent (9-for-17) at the free throw line.

Babson will play its fourth straight road game on Wednesday night when it travels to Newbury for a 7 p.m. tip, while Bowdoin will be at Southern Maine on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
