Hope Men's Basketball Falls Late To Cornerstone

Center Grant VanArendonk scored a season-high 16 points for the Hope men's basketball team in a 79-73 loss to Cornerstone Saturday at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic.

The Flying Dutchmen tied for second at the two-day tournament at Calvin with a 1-1 record, while Cornerstone finished first.

Sophomore point guard Ben Gardner of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel HS), topped Hope (1-3 overall) with 17 points.

"We had some great play in the paint. We kept going at them inside. They didn't have an answer," Hope coach Matt Neil said. "Then they went to their zone. We've got to be better taking at what they give us. The best thing is we've got four days to work on this stuff."

The Flying Dutchmen return to Calvin next weekend for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association-College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin Challenge. Hope plays Wheaton (Ill.) at 6 p.m. Friday and Carthage (Wis.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

VanArendonk, a senior from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS, shot 7-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from the foul line as he scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game.

VanArendonk also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and recorded a season-high four blocks. He had one apiece in each of the three previous games.

Sophomore forward Sam Otto of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton North HS) added a career-high 10 points off the bench for the Flying Dutchmen.
