AUSTIN, Texas – Dwayne Patterson scored 36 points and helped the Concordia University Texas men's basketball team pull away late for a 95-80 decision over Schreiner on Tuesday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.

Patterson added 11 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. The Long Beach, Calif., native made 9-of-13 attempts from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. He also hit 15-of-16 attempts from the free-throw line.

Andre Potts chipped in with 15 points off the bench.

The Tornados (2-0), which had 12 players score on the night, held a 75-74 lead with 5:06 remaining before Patterson fueled a 20-6 run.

The reigning American Southwest Conference Player of the Week scored 10 of Concordia Texas' final 20 points.

The Mountaineers (1-4) attempted to stop the run when Nick Garcia connected on a layup to cut the deficit to 83-78. However, Andre Potts buried his third 3-pointer of the night on the ensuing possession and pushed the advantage to eight points.

Patterson then scored the next six points, including four from the free-throw line, to increase the lead to 92-78.

After a pair of free throws by Schreiner, Josh Sanchez knocked down three of his own from the charity stripe to cap the 15-point win.

Both teams started the game fast on the offensive end of the floor and the Mountaineers, who shot 61.5 percent (16-for-26) in the opening frame, took a 17-14 lead in the first six-and-a-half minutes.

However, Concordia used the strength of an 18-4 spurt over the next four minutes to take an 11-point advantage.

The Tornados maintained the double-digit advantage with 4:30 left in the first half. Schreiner then started a 13-5 run that culminated with Stevan Guerrero's 3-pointer as the period ended to cut CTX's lead to 45-43.

The Mountaineers capitalized on the momentum in the second half and took a 56-55 lead with 13:02 play.

Eleven seconds later, Jonathan Garza hit a 3-pointer that put the Tornados back in front for good. Concordia pushed its lead to seven points four times over the next eight minutes. However, Guerrero helped Schreiner pull within one before the final run by Concordia.

The Mountaineers shot 55.6 percent (30-for-54) in the non-conference contest, but committed 21 turnovers.

CTX hit 47.6 percent (30-for-63) of its attempts from the field, including 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from behind the 3-point line. The hosts also hit 26-of-31 attempts (83.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

Guerrero led Schreiner with 33 points, while AJ Myres added 23.

The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30, when the squad plays at Louisiana College in the American Southwest Conference opener. Tip-off time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at H.O. West Fieldhouse in Pineville, La.
