(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 108-75, to traditional rival Wilmington College tonight (Tuesday, November 26, 2013) in a non-conference game at Hermann Court in Wilmington, Ohio.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-3 on the season and with the win, the Quakers improve to 2-1.
Thomas More took an early 4-2 lead when junior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) made a jumper with 17:11 to play in the first half. Wilmington answered with a 9-0 run capped by a lay-up by Ben McGriff with 15:21 to play in the half to take an 11-4 lead. The Saints tied the team at 11-11 with 13:06 to play in the half when senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) capped a 7-0 run with two free-throws. The Quakers used an 11-1 run to build a 22-12 lead with 9:56 to play in the first half when Law Williams made two free-throws. Freshman forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a lay-up with 6:38 to play in the opening half to cap a 12-7 run for the Saints to cut the lead to 29-24. Wilmington closed out the half on a 23-10 run to take a 52-34 halftime lead when Williams made a lay-up with 14-seconds to play in the half.
The Saints opened the second half on a 10-8 run to cut the lead to 60-44 with 16:21 to play in the game when freshman guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) made a lay-up. That would be as close as Thomas More would come as Wilmington closed out the game on a 48-31 run for the 108-75 victory.
Three Saints finished in double-figure scoring as Hayes had 19 points, McGovney had 14 and Mays had 10. Five Saints each finished with three rebounds, while Mays led the team in assists with three.
The Saints are idle until next Wednesday (December 4) when they travel to Grove City, Pennsylvania for their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener with Grove City College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Grove City College Arena.
