Miller's Career Day Leads to Win for No. 19 Cabrini

More news about: Cabrini

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Cabrini men's basketball team emerged from the 2013 Hoopsville National Invitational Class as the only club with a pair of wins after today's 83-72 victory over Salisbury University.  The No. 19 Cavaliers improved to 3-0 on the season with its home opener coming on Tuesday.

Senior Jon Miller led the Cavaliers with career highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds.  The senior connected on 7-8 attempts from the floor and 10-13 from the free throw line, while 10 of his boards came on the offensive glass.  Miller's three blocked shots also matched a career high.

Junior Aaron Walton-Moss was named to the All-Tournament team after pouring in 21 points to go with six rebounds and a half dozen assists.  Senior A.J. Picard chipped in with 18 points, including 10-10 from the charity stripe, while freshman Deryl Bagwell paired 10 points and six boards.

Both teams came out on fire as the score remained tied 15-15 just over five minutes into the action.  The game remained tight through the entire first 20 minutes, with neither team controlling the momentum.  Back to back Miller lay-ups with less than two minutes left in the opening half extended Cabrini's lead to 35-30 with 1:24 to play but the Sea Gulls scored seven of the last nine points of the half to send the teams into halftime tied at 37.

Walton-Moss tallied the first five points of the second half to open a lead Cabrini would not relinquish.  Salisbury cut the lead back to 49-48 with 14:32 to play after three consecutive free throws, but the Blue and White responded with a 7-1 spurt, culminated by a Rafferty bucket.

Each time it looked as though the Sea Gulls were going to make a run, Cabrini had an answer.  Salisbury cut the lead to two midway through the half but a Rafferty free throw and Miller lay-in built the lead back to five.

Salisbury trimmed the Blue and White advantage to 74-69 with 96 seconds to play when Picard found Bagwell for a three pointer deep in the right corner.   Picard and Bagwell iced the game from the charity stripe, connecting on six consecutive free throws down the stretch.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday when they welcome the University of Scranton (3-0) to Nerney Field House.  The men are scheduled to tip at 8:00 p.m. following the women's game.
