York Men’s Hoops Tops Methodist in Overtime

More news about: York (N.Y.)

After leading for most of the game, the Cardinals saw its lead evaporate late in the second half.  Methodist rallied from ten down at halftime to take a three-point lead with 5:29 to play.

The Cardinals regrouped to take the lead with under a minute left when back-to-back baskets by Omar St. John and Michael Woods put York on top by three, 75-72, with 50 seconds remaining.

But Methodist scored on its next possession on a lay-up by Bryan Hockaday and then fouled to stop the clock. Du'Quan Lawson hit one of two free throws to put York up by two, 76-74, with just 18 seconds to go.  But on the final possession of regulation, Methodist's Tabias Hilliard connected on a jumper with just three seconds left to send the game into overtime.

But the overtime period was all York. The Cardinals took an early lead and were near perfect in the final minute at the charity stripe to seal the victory.

York went up by seven with 1:26 left thanks in large part to four straight points from Jaron Williams. Methodist was forced to foul to extend the game but the Cardinals were 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the overtime period.

Michael Woods, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, was outstanding once again for York.  He finished with 33 points, including making 10-of-11 shots from the foul line, while also dishing out five assists.  St. John and Williams both had double-doubles for the Cardinals.  St. John had 17 points and ten boards and Jaron Williams recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Terell Roper added 14 points and seven boards, while Lawson registered eight points and five assists.

Methodist has four players in double figures, led by Hockaday, who had 22 points. They fall to 1-4 with the loss.

York, now 2-2, will open up the conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday at home against the College of Staten Island.  Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.  Admission is free and live stats are also available for your computer or mobile device.
