The Hope men's basketball team lost at fourth-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point 82-62 on Saturday night.
The Flying Dutchmen (0-2 overall) received a team-high 16 points from sophomore point guard Ben Gardner of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel HS).
Stevens Point (3-0) outscored Hope 45-28 during the second half.
"I'm proud of my guys. We played a good 30 minutes of very competitive basketball," Hope coach Matt Neil said. "We're going to continue to forge ahead, believe in what we're doing and do it all together so we're able to compete 40 minutes of play."
Senior center Nate VanArendonk of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) added 13 points and five rebounds for the Flying Dutchmen.
Sophomore center Brock Benson of Willowbrook, Ill. (Hinsdale South HS) scored 11 points off the bench for the Flying Dutchmen.
"I thought we had a terrific play out of our bigs with Brock and Nate," Neil said. "Nate had his best half of basketball in a Hope uniform, 13 points in the first half.
"Credit Stevens Point. They noticed we weren't shooting the ball from the outside, so they packed it in and took away our inside game. They dared us to shoot. We were 11-of-15 out of our bigs, but 1-of-14 from the 3-point line."
