MADISON, Wis. – After a long, hard-fought victory over Fontbonne on Saturday night, some might have expected the Edgewood College men's basketball team to come out flat on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles proved doubters wrong, however, and held a lead for nearly the entire game in a 65-59 victory over Westminster College for Edgewood College's second straight victory.
After Rusch began the second with a bucket, a steal and a dunk from the Blue Jays gave Westminster a one-point lead, but Klocek quickly erased any momentum and drained a three-pointer. The Eagles (2-1) pushed their lead to nine after Diekvoss and Matt Savatski connected for three straight triples and Edgewood College was in the driver seat at the 10 minute mark. The Eagles kept the advantage in double digits for a bit, but the Blue Jays went on an 8-0 run in two minutes to cut their deficit to four with just over two minutes to play. Edgewood College had been struggling from the charity stripe for the majority of the game, but made them when they counted to seal the victory. Rusch and Klocek combined to go 6-for-6 from the line in the final one minute and 30 seconds to ice the game.
Lopez registered his first double-double as an Eagle, leading the team with 11 rebounds while adding 10 points. With 17 points, Klocek led the team in scoring for the second straight game. Rusch added 14 including six from the free throw line. The second non-conference victory is already one more than the Eagles had all of last season.
The Eagles will open their NACC schedule this Saturday against Benedictine University. Live stats and live video will be available for the home contest. Links can be found onEdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
