(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male), junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) and freshman forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) all scored career-points today (Saturday, November 23, 2013) as the Thomas More College men's basketball team defeated in-state rival Transylvania University, 105-97, in a non-conference game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 1-2 and with the loss, the Pioneers fall to 0-2.
Thomas More jumped out to a 22-16 lead when Hayes converted an old fashion three-point play with 9:10 to play in the first half. Transylvania answered with an 11-4 run capped by a Chris Taylor lay-up with 6:22 to play in the opening half to take a 27-26 lead. The Saints used an 8-4 run to take a 34-31 lead with 4:37 to play in the half when Hayes made a three-pointer. The Pioneer's Ethan Rowe made a three-pointer with 1:26 to play in the first half to cap a 13-7 run and give Transylvania a 44-41 lead. Thomas More closed out the half on a 5-0 run and took a 46-44 lead at halftime when Hayes made a lay-up with 32-seconds to play in the first half.
Transylvania opened the second half on a 6-4 run to tie the game at 50-50 when Logan Wade made three-pointer with 18:12 to play in the game. Thomas More answered with a 21-13 run to build a 71-63 lead on a lay-up by junior guard Al Upshaw (Cincinnati, Ohio/Gamble Montessori) with 12:12 to play in the second half. Mason Monroe made two free-throws with 9:02 to play in the game to cap a 10-4 run by the Pioneers to cut the lead to 75-73. Undaunted, the Saints went on a 15-8 run capped by a Mumford lay-up with 4:09 to play in the game to extend the lead to 90-81. Transylvania used a 10-7 run to cut the lead to 97-91 on two Monroe free-throws with 1:11 to play in the game, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More closed out the game on an 8-6 run for the 105-97 victory.
Hayes led all scorers with his career-high 33 points, while Mumford added his career-high 31 points, McGovney had a career-high 16 points and junior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) added 10 points. Hayes led the team on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds and Pipes added six boards. Pipes led the team in assists with six and senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) led the team in steals with four.
Thomas More returns to action on Tuesday (November 26) when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play Wilmington College in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m.
