Men’s Basketball Plays Well but Falls to Christopher Newport

More news about: York (N.Y.)

Coming into the season, Christopher Newport landed just outside the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, receiving several votes. But the Cardinals played well and the game came down to the final minute of play.

Junior Michael Woods had another big game for the Cardinals, netting 30 points, while Omar St. John chipped in 20 points.  Jaron Williams finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Donald Rodriguez added nine points.

The Captains looked like they might run away with it in the early going after they jumped out to a 10-2 advantage, following a three-pointer with 16:42 to go in the opening half. The Cardinals settled down though and tied the game at 18-18 thanks to a three-point play by St. John.  That play started a 10-0 run that gave the Cardinals a 25-18 lead with 11:16 left in the first half.  St. John had seven of those points.

The Cardinals led by as many as ten points in the half but Christopher Newport would finish the half strong and the two teams were tied going into the locker room.

The game remained close in the second half until a 14-2 run by the Captains made it 71-58 in favor of Christopher Newport with 10:40 to play.

York would battle back though and closed to within six with 1:41 to play, after a jumper by St. John made it 87-81. York then had a chance to make it a one-possession game when they had a good look on a three-pointer two possessions later, but the shot was off the mark.  The Captains then got the rebound and ran out the clock to secure the win.

Christopher Newport was led by Tra Benefield, who scored 25 points, and by Mike Cherr, who finished with 20.

York (1-2) will now take on Methodist University in the consolation game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., while Christopher Newport (3-0) will host Emory University in the championship game at 2:00 p.m.
