EWING, N.J. – William Paterson (3-0, 1-0 NJAC) opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's basketball play with an 87-69 victory at The College of New Jersey (0-3, 0-1 NJAC) Nov. 23.
Junior 6-2 guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) led all players with 30 points, making seven of 12 (.583) field goals and all 13 free throws, adding five assists. Senior 6-2 guard Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) had a double-double with 24 tallies and a team-best 10 rebounds, and sophomore 6-4 guard Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) contributed 21 points.
The Pioneers jumped out to an 11-point lead midway through the first half (21-10, 10:07) and cruised to a 42-29 halftime lead. The Lions briefly cut it to single digits eight minutes into the second period, but WP responded with a 9-2 run to re-establish control.
William Paterson shot 50.0 (27-54) percent from the field, including a 6-for-11 (.545) effort from behind the arc, and made 27 of 30 free throws (.900) while limiting TCNJ to 39.2 (20-51) percent shooting overall.
Bobby Bracket led the Lions with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
William Paterson will visit Brooklyn Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 6:00 p.m.
