Wheaton (Ill.) rolls past Spalding University 72-47

Wooster, Ohio- The Wheaton men's basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 72-47 victory over Spalding University on Friday night at the Al Van Rie/Rotary Tournament hosted by the College of Wooster. Wheaton will face the winner of Friday night's Wooster/Baldwin-Wallace match-up on Saturday at 6 PM (EST). The loss pushed the Golden Eagles of Spalding to 0-4.

Wheaton shot 41.4% (24-58) from the field on the night and 4-13 (30.8%) from beyond the arc. Wheaton was 20-29 (69%) from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles shot 36.4% (20-55) from the field, 3-10 from the three-point line and 4-5 from the free throw line.

After an early 4-3 deficit, Wheaton ran off a 10-0 ran that gave the Thunder a 13-4 lead with 13:52 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles answered with a 22-9 run that gave Spalding its biggest lead of the night at 25-22. Wheaton finished the half on a 7-0 run to take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

The Thunder opened the second half on a 7-0 run that held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the first four and a half minutes of the second half. In doing so, Wheaton build the lead to 11 and would not let the lead slip back into single digits for the remainder of the game. Wheaton pushed the lead to as high as 25 points on a pair of occasions including the final 72-47 tally.


Nate Haynes led the Thunder with dominating 16 point, 17 rebound effort. Tyler Peters was 8-12 from the field in a 22-point performance and Brayden Teuscher added 15 points of his own. Michael Berg (PICTURED RIGHT) pitched in eight points and eight rebounds.
