GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Elizabethtown looked to be headed for its first Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament title with 9:57 to go after Joe Schwalm's 3-pointer put the Blue Jays up by 12, but DeSales, like it did in Friday's first round game, ramped up the offense late. The Bulldogs outscored E-town 34-16 over the final 10 minutes to take the championship, 73-67, Saturday afternoon at Bream Gymnasium.
Tabbed as the lowest team in the Commonwealth Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, Elizabethtown (1-1) got monster efforts across the board to defeat Gettysburg by 27 Friday night to reach the final. Saturday, they had the defending Freedom Conference runner-up Bulldogs on the ropes for the first three quarters of the game.
Andrew Mantz was a perfect 3-for-3 shooting, and hit his first career 3-pointer, to help the Blue Jays to a 33-32 halftime lead. Mantz had nine points and seven boards at the break, eventually turning in a 16-point, 12-rebound, five-block afternoon to garner all-tournament team honors. Schwalm and Tyler Simpkiss added six points each in the opening 20 minutes.
Elizabethtown shot 40.7% overall and 41.2% from beyond the arc. The Jays nailed seven threes in the first half and 10 for the game. The Blue Jays hit for 10 treys a night earlier as well.
Tied at 34 with 18:22 to play, the Jays went on a 10-2 run over the next 3:23. Schwalm started the run with a three. Phil Wenger, Lee Eckert and Mantz all contributed layups.
A bucket and two free throws by Mike Coleman and a lone free throw by Kuity Slanger weren't enough to slow E-town's momentum. Eckert and Mantz kept doing work inside and when Schwalm connected on another three just after the 10-minute mark, the blue and gray had its largest lead of the day at 51-39.
The Blue Jay lead was still nine after a Simpkiss trifecta with 8:08 to go, but the Bulldogs made their way back into the game shortly thereafter.
Paul Pammer answered Simpkiss' three with one of his own and DeSales made five of its next six baskets to take a 58-57 lead. Elizabethtown missed four in a row during the same stretch. The two teams would trade the lead twice before DSU held onto the lead for good.
Wenger cut the lead to 66-65 with 1:16 remaining with his layup, but DeSales made it a 3-point game again at the line with Michael Guldin knocking down a pair. Mantz couldn't convert around the rim on Elizabethtown's next possession and Coleman sunk another pair at the line to make it a two-score game.
Elizabethtown would come up empty on three straight offensive looks down the stretch before Eckert's basket with seven ticks to go brought the Jays back within 72-67.
Coleman made a living at the line where he hit 8-of-10 shots in a 14-point second half. Pammer connected on a pair of threes and was 4-of-6 shooting in the second half for 10 points. DeSales outscored E-town 41-34 in the second half.
Though the Blue Jays hit 10 threes, it took them 31 attempts to do it after going 10-of-18 in their season opener.
Schwalm drilled a game-high four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points and was named to the all-tournament team along with Mantz. Eckert totaled 13 points and seven rebounds. Wenger had another strong game at the point with eight points, seven assists and three steals.
Elizabethtown was appearing in its third Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament since the tournament began in 1991. The Blue Jays fell 73-71 to Gettysburg in the 1994 championship game and were beaten 71-56 by Gettysburg in the first round in 2008.
Wednesday night will see the Blue Jays at home for the first time this season when they take on Eastern Mennonite at 7 p.m.
