The North Central College men's basketball team made quick work of the Illinois Institute of Technology Wednesday evening, getting contributions from the entire roster in a 87-30 walkover of the Scarlet Hawks at the Keating Sports Center.
The Cardinals (2-1) used their defense to harass Illinois Tech into 26 turnovers and permitted the hosts just 32 shot attempts from the floor, taking a huge lead early and allowing their reserves to finish the job in the second half.
North Central opened the game with a 16-2 run and extended its lead throghout the first half, closing the period with a 45-10 lead. The Scarlet Hawks were just 4 of 13 shooting with 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Tyler Sutton led the way for the Cardinals with 11 points, including a 3 for 4 effort from three-point range, while Jack Burchett contributed seven points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The Cardinals led by as many as 60 points in the second period and finished with the second-largest winning margin in North Central history, eclipsed only by a 61-point win (107-46) over Judson College on Dec. 30, 2005.
North Central shot 56.5 percent (35-62) from the floor, including an 8 for 16 effort from beyond the arc, and owned a 42-16 rebounding advantage. The Cardinals were led in scoring by Mike Reinke, who totaled 13 points on 6 of 6 shooting in the final 10 minutes of play and shared the team lead in rebounds with Burchett (8).David Robinson added 12 points, while Brandon WIlliams put up 11. Jack Merrithey led the Cardinals with four assists and Landon Gamble finished with a team-best three steals.
Illinois Tech was led by Elezoglu Dimitrios' nine points.
The Cardinals travel to face Aurora University (1-2) on Saturday. Tipoff at Thornton Gymnasium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
