ST. PAUL – Not much could stop the Northwestern men's basketball team on Tuesday night as the Eagles scored a 19-point victory over local nonconference opponent Macalester College. UNW featured its third different leading scorer in as many games as freshman Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) turned in a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the 83-64 win.

Northwestern trailed just once in the game when the Scots' Dylan Kilgour made one of two free throw attempts. After that, the Eagles took off on a 10-2 run thanks to early points in the paint from Gisler. The rookie showcased his versatility with back-to-back three-pointers midway through the first half to give UNW an 18-12 advantage.

Macalester fought back, cutting what was a seven-point lead to just two as Kilgour and teammate Kareem Ismail found room in the lane. The Scots' spree was quickly reversed as a Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) three-point play for the Eagles took the home team's lead into double digits. Gisler's lay-up at the 1:08 mark of the first period gave the freshman his 12th point of the half and Northwestern a 15-point buffer going into the break.

UNW head coach Tim Grosz went 10 deep on his bench in the first half as Northwestern out-scored Macalester's bench 13-6 while doubling up the Scots' eight points in the paint throughout the initial 20 minutes of play.

The Purple and Gold's double-digit margin remained intact throughout the second half as Northwestern's lead grew to as much as 21 before the end of the game. While Gisler continued to drain shots, Caleb Janson (Pierz, Minnesota/Pierz Healy) maintained his presence on the glass the sophomore finished with 11 rebounds, marking the second time in three games that Janson has grabbed 10 or more boards. Carney chipped in 15 points, while the Blake Van Maanen (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian) Show returned with a perfect 3-3 rate from downtown for a total of 14 points. Van Maanen, who played just 21 minutes throughout all of 2012-2013, is 10 of 15 beyond the arc this year, averaging 12.3 points per game off the bench.

Now 2-1 on the season, UNW has a week to prepare for its first road contest of the 2013-2014 campaign next Tuesday when the Eagles head just a few miles south for another Snelling Avenue shootout against Hamline University.
