Montclair State Falls Short Against Mary Washington in Season Opener

Fredericksburg, VA – Sophomore Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) scored 19 points while senior Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds however Montclair State dropped its season opener falling to host Mary Washington 70-64 in the Hampton Inn South Tournament on Saturday evening.

Senior Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) had 16 points for the Red Hawks (0-1) who will face College of Staten Island in the Third-Place game on Sunday, November 17 at 1:00 pm.

Montclair State found itself in an early 10-point deficit and trailed 27-14 near the midpoint of the first half before cutting the deficit to 40-30 at halftime.

In the second half, the Red Hawks continued to chip away at the lead and got within 55-52 on a layup by James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ, West Morris Central) with 9:39 to play. After Mary Washington hit a three to go back up 58-52, MSU scored the next eight points, including consecutive three-pointers by Gonzalez giving Montclair State its first lead at 60-58 with 5:14 to play.

Two free throws from D'Angelo with 3:10 left gave Montclair a 62-60 lead however Bradley Reister drained a three for the Eagles igniting a 10-point run that put the game away for Mary Washington.

Singleton added four rebounds while D'Angelo handed out nine assists for Montclair State.
