Grandinetti, Zitani Lead Boxers To First Win Of The Season

PASADENA, Calif. – Riley Grandinetti (Jr., Murray, Utah) led three Pacific players in double figures and Zaniel Zitani (Sr., Oakland, Calif.) Saturday as Pacific won it's first game of the season by outsmarting Caltech, 78-51, in men's basketball action at the Braun Athletic Center.
 
Grandinetti led all scorers with 17 points, connecting on 5 of 8 from the field and 4 of 6 from three-point range.  Zitani, meanwhile, scored 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds as he hit 7 of 10 from the field.  Mitch Wettig (Jr., Bend, Ore.) finished with 12 points.
 
Pacific (1-1) finished the night shooting 45.5 percent from the field, including a 15 of 25 effort in the first half.  The Boxers also made 8 of 18 from three-point and 20 of 27 from the free throw line.
 
Nasser Al-Rayes was the only Caltech player in double figures, coming off the bench to score 10.  David LeBaron and Luke Lango each scored nine.  The Beavers finished the game shooting 31.7 percent from the field and 5 of 7 from the free throw line.
 
After Caltech opened the contest with the first bucket, the Boxers quickly jumped out on an 18-3 run.  Wettig and Grandinetti each scored six in the run while Cameron Hayes (Sr., Milton, Wash.) closed the surge with his lay-in at the 12:24 mark for the 18-5 lead.
 
Caltech cut the lead back down to nine points on three different occasions before the Boxers went on another 22-8 run over a seven-minute span.  Zitani closed the run with his lay-in with 2:53 left en route to a 47-24 halftime lead.
 
Pacific continued to surge over the first five minutes of the second half, building their biggest lead of 32 points, 61-29, on Zitani's lay-in at the 15-minute mark.  Caltech came no closer than 26 points the rest of the way despite Pacific shooting just 33 percent in the stanza.
 
Pacific will close out their three-game Southern California road trip on Sunday, facing La Sierra at 2 p.m.
