BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Medgar Evers College used a 17-3 run over a five-minute span in the second half to pull away from the University of New England on its way to an 80-70 men's basketball win Sunday (Nov. 17) in the consolation game of the Ramada Roundball Invitational held at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The victory evens the Cougars' record at 1-1, while the Nor'easters drop to 0-2 on the young season.

Junior Khalid Yousef (Flushing, N.Y.) tallied 23 points to lead the way for Medgar Evers. All-tournament selection Valin Williams (Brooklyn. N.Y.) scored 15 points and had 27 rebounds -- nine of which came on the offensive glass. The junior forward/center grabbed 15 of those caroms before halftime. Sophomore guard Pablo Segura (Flushing, N.Y.) had 11 points and first-year guard Jordan Tyson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added 10.

For UNE, rookie guard Justin Pollard (Cape Neddick, Maine) poured in a game-high 27 points to go with four steals. He was 6 of 11 from beyond the arc. Senior guard Kurt Steiner (Rutland, Mass.) was chosen to the all-tournament team after contributing 12 points and four boards. First-year forward Brayden Morse (Long Beach, Calif.) had 12 points and six rebounds.

Despite an 18-point first-half effort from Pollard, the Cougars were able to take a 44-32 advantage into the locker room.

The Nor'easters chipped away at the deficit over the opening 10 minutes of the second frame and grabbed a brief lead (56-52) before Medgar Evers scored 17 of the next 20 points to seize control.

UNE fought back and was able to get within four (74-70) with 1:48 left, but the Cougars would hold Big Blue scoreless the rest of the way.

The Nor'easters will look to get into the win column Tuesday (Nov. 19) when they host University of Southern Maine at 7:30 p.m.
