Babson Men's Basketball Cruises Past Skidmore, 78-60, To Claim Invitational Title

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Joey Flannery (Acton, Mass.) scored a team-high 22 points while juniors Eric Dean (Gilford, N.H.) and John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) each chipped in with 16, helping Babson College win the Babson Invitational Tournament championship with a 78-60 victory over Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at Staake Gymnasium.

With the victory, Babson is now 2-0 on the year while Skidmore drops to 1-1.

Senior Kenny Ross (Furlong, Pa.) was selected as the Tournament Most Outstanding Player after contributing three points, four rebounds and a game-high nine assists for the Beavers. Junior David Mack (Holden, Mass.) had nine points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Dean, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, and Wickey combined to grab 14 rebounds in the win.

Thoroughbreds' sophomore Erik Sanders (New York, N.Y.) had 22 points and nine rebounds while sophomores Aldin Medunjanin (New York, N.Y.) and Tanner Brooks (Pikesville, Md.) notched 12 and 11 points, respectively.

For the second straight night, the Green and White trailed only once and quickly took control of the game with a 10-0 first-half run. A Medunjanin layup  pulled Skidmore within 13-10 with 10:07 left in the period, but first-year Sam Bohmiller (Franklin, Mass.) buried a three-pointer, Wickey hit one-of-two free throws, and Flannery scored five straight points to put the Beavers ahead 22-10. Wickey followed with another free throw as the hosts grabbed their biggest lead of the half at 23-10 with 5:27 left before the break.

The Thoroughbreds got within eight on three occasions early in the second half, but Babson shot 61 percent (17-for-28) after halftime and was never threatened. The Green and White took its biggest lead of the game on a layup by Mack with 2:32 left in the game.

The Beavers shot 51 percent (29-for-57) from the floor for the game and knocked down nine three-pointers for the second consecutive contest. Skidmore shot just 40 percent (23-for-58) from the field and struggled from beyond the arc, making just three of 17 attempts. Babson also held a 41-28 advantage on the glass.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday night as Babson travels to Lasell for a 7 p.m. game, while Skidmore will be at Castleton State, also at 7 p.m.
