York Comeback Falls Short in Season Opener

More news about: York (N.Y.)

The Cardinals trailed Marymount 70-59 at the 1:40 mark, and it looked the Saints had the game in hand.  But a three-pointer by Du'Quan Lawson and a steal and subsequent lay-up by Omar St. john quickly cut the deficit to six points with 1:14 to go.

Following a defensive stop by the Cardinals, Jaron Williams tipped in a missed shot to make it a four-point deficit.  After Marymount scored two points on free throws, the Cardinals' Michael Woods was fouled on a three-pointer.  Woods made all three and the Cardinals trailed, 72-69, with 40 seconds to play.

York forced another stop and came up with the rebound with just four seconds left.  The Cardinals were able to get off a three-pointer at the buzzer but the shot came up short and the Saints escaped with the victory.

In the loss, Woods led York with 21 points, while St. John finished with 19 points, seven boards and five assists. Terell Roper chipped in nine points and Jaron Williams finished with seven points and 11 rebounds.

The Cardinals could not contain Marymount's J.C. Hoellich, who had a game-high 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting.

York will now play Lebanon Valley College in the consolation game on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
