WESTON, Mass. – Bowdoin College defeated host Regis College, 74-61, to capture the 2013 Regis College Tip-Off Tournament Championship on Saturday night in Weston, Mass. The Polar Bears improve to 2-0 with the win, while the Pride dip to 1-1 on the young season.

Regis struck first as Carlos Bermudez-Glean (Boston, Mass.) connected on a deep triple to open the game, but the Polar Bears responded with six-straight points capped off by a John Swords (Sudbury, Mass.) layup to take an early 6-3 lead. The teams traded baskets and were tied as late as 8-8 before back-to-back threes from Andrew Madlinger (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Grant White (Springfield, Vt.) made it a 16-8 advantage with 13:39 to play.

Sam Jean-Gilles (Melrose, Mass.) connected on a jumper to make it an 18-14 game two minutes later and an Osanto Marc Jr. (Kissimmee, Fla.) bucket at the 9:29 mark left Regis trailing 21-16. Bowdoin pushed its lead to 10 on a pair of Lucas Hausman (Westport, Conn.) freethrows and another Madlinger three, but the Pride hung tough and Bermudez-Glean stole a pass at half court and scored on the break to make it a 28-23 game and force a Polar Bear timeout.

Bowdoin led by eight with just under two minutes to play and a Jean-Gilles three from the top of the key cut the deficit to five with 1:26 remaining. Both offenses stalled over the final 86 seconds, except for a Matt Palecki (Southborough, Mass.) free throw with two seconds on the clock, as the Polar Bears took a 34-28 lead into the break.

Regis cut the deficit to three after a triple from Bermudez-Glean and a tip-in from Sam Jean-Gilles made it a 36-33 ball game in the opening minutes of the second half. The Polar Bears answered with an 11-2 run over the next four minutes that included eight points from John Swords to take a 47-34 lead, and they later stretched their lead to 54-38 after an and-one layup from Neil Fuller (Sandy Springs, Ga.).

The Pride clawed their way back into the contest as a Jaiwon Martin (Coral Springs, Fla.) layup made it 63-52 with less than six minutes to play. Bowdoin put the game away for good with another 11-2 run as Swords and Keegan Pieri (Camden, Maine) combined for nine points during the stretch to put the Polar Bears on top 74-54 with 1:49 to play. Regis made a late push as Jaren Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.), Lewis Smith (Boston, Mass.) and Martin all scored in the closing minute to get to the final score of 74-61.

Bowdoin won the rebounding battle 40-27, scoring 32 points in the paint and posting 17 second chance points. The Pride held the advantage in turnovers, however, committing only seven errors to 11 for the visitors.

The Pride were led by 20 points from Bermudez-Glean, who also added two assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Sam Jean-Gilles added nine points and eight rebounds, while Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) and Jaiwon Martin each chipped in eight points on the night. Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.) added four points and seven rebounds.

Tournament MVP John Swords posted 18 points and nine rebounds in the Championship game, while All-Tournament selection Keegan Pieri added a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the Polar Bears to the win. The Pride had two players named to the All-Tournament Team in Ryan Chambers and Ethan Peana (Staten Island, N.Y.). Fitchburg State University's Mike Ingram-Rubin (Boston, Mass.) and Western Connecticut State University's Joseph Groski (New Milford, Conn.) rounded out the All-Tournament selections.

Joining Swords and Pieri in double-figures was Andrew Madlinger who had 14 points and four rebounds. Lucas Hausman came off the bench to net eight points and grab four rebounds to go with a game-high five assists.

Regis returns to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Medford, Mass. for a matchup against Tufts University scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Bowdoin will host St. Joseph's College of Maine next Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
