Men's Basketball Falls to CSI in Conference Championship Game

More news about: John Jay

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team fell just a bit short in its quest for the conference championship as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Staten Island 80-74 in the championship game of the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) / Con Edison men's basketball championship.

With the win by CSI, the Dolphins have now won back-to-back conference championships.  John Jay is now 1-3 all-time in CUNAYC's big game.

John Jay was led in scoring by Jamar Harry and Darryl Dennis with team co-highs 15 points. Both were named to the all-tournament team. Harry added seven rebounds for the Bloodhounds. Meanwhile Korede Griffith chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Oshea Alexander had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

CSI was led by tournament MVP Bloochy Magloire with a game-high 26 points and four steals, while Jon Chadwick-Myers had 15 points. Fellow teammates Javon Cox and Dylan Bugler added double-doubles as Cox had 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Bugler added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The No. 3 seeded Bloodhounds got off to a hot start and led 14-7 in the opening stages of the contest. The Bloodhounds' seven point lead was their largest lead of the game and they led by that score with less than four minutes gone by.

Top seeded CSI roared back and used a 9-1 run to take its first lead of the night as the Dolphins led 16-15 lead with 9:58 to go.

John Jay was up by three and led 20-17 when the Dolphins used a 13-3 spurt to take a seven point lead, and CSI never trailed again. CSI led 30-23 with just over two minutes remaining before going into halftime ahead by four at 36-32.

In the second half, CSI managed to hold a tenuous lead through the first few minutes. John Jay tied the score at 46 with 13:37 to play. A continuation three point play by Alexander evened the score at that moment.

But CSI raced away with a 17-4 spurt to pull away with a 63-50 lead, the Dolphins' largest lead of the night with 8:06 to play.

The run proved to be the cushion the Dolphins needed. CSI still led by double figures in the final two minutes as they were ahead 70-59 with 1:43 to play. But John Jay was not quite done. Over the next minute, the Bloodhounds used an 8-3 spurt to pull to within six with under forty seconds remaining.

Moments later the Bloodhounds got the deficit down to five. After Magloire went 2-for-2 from the free throw line, Kris Owens, who had eight points and eight rebounds, knocked down a three point field goal with twenty-six seconds left to make the score 75-70.

But the Dolphins made clutch free throws down the stretch to maintain a safe lead. CSI went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe over the final seventy-four seconds en route to winning the game.

At 15-13 overall, John Jay, who finished over .500 for the first time in nine seasons will now await to see if they qualify for an ECAC Metro Regional bid. The Bloodhounds will learn on Monday whether their season will continue.
