Men's Basketball Powers Past Brooklyn Bulldogs

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team earned another conference win as the Bloodhounds defeated Brooklyn College 78-73 on Saturday afternoon.
 
John Jay now stands at 9-4 overall this season and 6-1 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, while Brooklyn College falls to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in CUNYAC.
 
The Bloodhounds were led by Isaiah Holman with 25 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists. He connected on six of thirteen three point field goal attempts. His 25 points also put him over 900 for his career as he now stands at 916 for his career. Fellow teammate Jamar Harry scored 10 points and had nine rebounds. He upped his career point total to 917.
 
Darryl Dennis added 10 points in the win, while Korede Griffith had nine points, seven assists and four steals. Oshea Alexander grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
Brooklyn College was led by Kavon Baker with 27 points and nine rebounds.
 
The visiting Bloodhounds led almost the entire way. The game saw seven lead changes and four ties, all in the first half. John Jay took the lead for good with 5:58 to go in the opening period on a layup by Alexander to make the score 27-26. The field goal ignited a 10-2 run that saw John Jay take a 35-28 lead.
 
John Jay extended its lead to eight moments later and led 38-30 with 2:08 to go after a three point field goal by Antoine Long.
 
The Bloodhounds led 40-33 at halftime.
 
John Jay kept the Bulldogs at arms length distance the entire second half. The Bloodhounds led by as much as 11 and led by that margin twice, most recently with 8:03 after a made free throw by Kris Owens who scored five points.
 
Brooklyn cut the Bloodhound lead to four and was down 66-62 with 6:29 to go. But from there John Jay spurted away with a 10-4 run to take a 10-point lead with 2:30 to go as the Bloodhounds were ahead 76-66. A fast break lay-up by Dennis capped the spurt.
 
The lead proved to be large enough as John Jay held on for the win.
 
John Jay held a 31-17 advantage on points off turnovers, and the Bloodhounds outscored the Bulldogs 16-0 on fast break points.
 
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Jan. 14 for a home contest against New Jersey City University at 7 p.m.
