Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team suffered a 78-73 loss against the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match-up on Saturday afternoon at the West Quad Center.
With the loss, Brooklyn drops to 3-8 overall on the season and 2-4 in the CUNYAC; while John Jay moves to 9-4 overall on the year and 6-1 in conference play.
The first half featured a tight affair with seven lead changes and three ties. Following a three-pointer from sophomore Steven Diaz, which put the Bulldogs ahead, 26-25, with 6:25 remaining in the opening period, the Bloodhounds ran off a quick 7-0 run to take a 32-26 advantage with 4:33 left before the halftime break. John Jay would go up by as many as eight, 38-30, after a three from Antoine Long at the 2:08 mark. The visitors would eventually take a 40-33 cushion into the intermission.
John Jay would keep Brooklyn at arm's length throughout the second half, as the Bulldogs would only get to within four points on a number of occasions. The Bloodhounds led by as many as 11 twice in the final half, as the Bulldogs would be unable to overcome its halftime deficit. BC outscored John Jay 40-38 in the second half.
John Jay took advantage of Brooklyn turnovers throughout the game, as the Bloodhounds netted 31 points off of 25 BC turnovers. The visitors also outscored the Bulldogs in the paint 40-30 and also scored 21 second chance points.
For the game, Brooklyn shot 37.7% (23-61) from the field and 27.8% (5-18) from three. The Bulldogs also shot 73.3% (22-30) from the free throw line.
John Jay shot 44.8% (30-67) from field and 40.0% (8-20) from beyond the arc. The Bloodhounds converted just 52.6% (10-19) from the charity stripe.
Senior Kavon Baker tied a career-high with 27 points to lead all scorers, while freshman Egzon Gjonbalaj set a new career-high with 15 points. Baker and Gjonbalaj also grabbed nine rebounds apiece. Diaz also tied his career-high with 13 points going 4-for-6 from three, while freshman Shayne Martinez dished out four assists to go with seven points.
John Jay was led by Isaiah Holman's team-high 25 points going 6-for-13 from downtown, to go along with eight rebounds and a game-best seven steals, while Jamar Harry and Darryl Dennis each finished with 10 points. Harry just missed a double-double as he added nine rebounds, while Oshea Alexander grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points.
Brooklyn returns to action this Monday, January 14th, as the Bulldogs will be on the road in Wayne, NJ to take on the Pioneers of William Patterson University in a non-conference match-up.
