(LATROBE, Pa.) - The second-seeded Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 81-67, to top-seeded Saint Vincent College tonight (Saturday, February 23, 2013) in the championship game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament at the Carey Center in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 23-5 overall and earn the PAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. With the loss, the Saints fall to 23-5 and must wait until Monday (February 25) at 12:30 p.m. to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Division III Championship brackets will be announced on Monday on the NCAA Championship Website (www.ncaa.com) at 12:30 p.m.
Saint Vincent took an early 14-10 lead with 14:29 to play in the first half when Dillon Stith made a three-pointer. Thomas More closed out the half on a 26-14 run to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room when junior power forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) made two free-throws with three-seconds to play in the half.
In the second half, the Saints got a quick lay-up by junior small forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) with 19:51 to play in the game to extend the lead to 38-28. Saint Vincent answered with a 17-5 run to take a 45-43 lead with 15:01 to play in the game when Edmond Wright made a lay-up. Housley made a lay-up with 11:38 to play in the game to cap a 7-2 run to give the Saints a 50-47 lead. The Bearcats responded with a 34-15 lead to build an 81-65 lead with 1:01 to play in the game when Wright made two free-throws. Senior shooting guard Ethan King (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) made two free-throws with 43-seconds to play in the game, but it wasn't enough as Saint Vincent won the game, 81-67.
Marshall led three Saints in double figure scoring with 18 points, while Housley finished with 16 points and junior point guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) had 14 points. Marshall and senior shooting guard Ross Renken (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led the team on the boards with five rebounds each and Marshall led the team in blocks with three.
