(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Sophomore shooting guard Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) scored a career-high 23 points to lead the second-seeded Thomas More College men's basketball team to an 82-60 win over seventh-seeded Geneva College tonight (Tuesday, February 19, 2013) in a quarterfinal game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 22-4 and advance to the play third-seeded Thiel College on Thursday (February 21) at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the PAC Tournament at the Connor Convocation Center. With the loss, the Golden Tornadoes end the season at 5-21.
Geneva took an early 5-0 lead with 17:40 to play in the first half when Tyler Damazo made a three-pointer. Thomas More answered with a 17-5 run to take a 17-10 lead when junior point guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) made a three-pointer with 10:50 to play in the half. The Golden Tornadoes used a 4-0 run capped by a Keynon Jackson jumper to cut the lead to 17-14 with 9:30 to play in the game. Clark made a lay-up with 5:40 to play in the first half to cap a 12-5 run to extend the Saints' lead to 29-19. Geneva responded with a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 33-29 with 1:59 to play in the half when DJ Damazo made a lay-up. Thomas More closed out the half on a 6-2 run to take a 39-31 halftime lead when senior power forward Michael Rowan (Goshen, Ky./North Oldham) made one-of-two free-throws with one-second to play.
Thomas More opened the second half on a 24-11 run to extend the lead to 63-42 with 8:56 to play in the game when Clark made a three-pointer. DJ Damazo capped a Geneva 4-0 run with a lay-up with 8:15 to play in the game to cut the Saints' lead to 63-46. That would be as close as Geneva would come as Thomas More would extend the lead to as many as 25 points as it closed out the game on a 19-14 run for the 82-60 victory.
Two other Saints joined Clark in double-figure scoring as Hayes had 12 points and junior small forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) had 10. Clark led the team on the boards with five rebounds, while junior point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) led the team in assists with seven.
