PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Six Plattsburgh players scored in double figures, led by Kalik Parker's 16 points off the bench, as the Cardinals edged nationally 23rd-ranked Cortland, 80-77, to snap the Red Dragons' 12-game winning streak.
With the win, Plattsburgh (17-7, 13-4 SUNYAC) clinched the second seed for next week's SUNYAC tournament. The Cardinals will receive a bye in the quarterfinals and will play in the semifinals Friday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. versus an opponent to be determined in Cortland.
The Red Dragons (20-4, 14-3 SUNYAC) are guaranteed the top seed in next week's tournament even if they finish tied with Plattsburgh after Saturday's final regular-season games. Cortland also receives a bye in the quarterfinals and will host an opponent to be determined in Friday's semifinals at 8 p.m. The championship game will be Saturday, Feb. 23, at 4 p.m. in Cortland.
Parker made 6-of-10 shots, including 4-of-8 three-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds. Jordan Moody and Ezra Hodgson scored 14 points each, while Chris Manning just missed a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Shamoy McIntosh scored 11 points and Reggie Williams added 10 points, five blocks and five rebounds.
Senior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) led Cortland with 24 points. He hit 6-of-12 three-pointers and 9-of-16 shots in all. Senior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored 18 points and dished out a team-high eight assists.
Junior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) totaled 10 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. Senior Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) registered 10 points and nine rebounds and senior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) totaled nine points.
Plattsburgh shot 45 percent from the floor, 48 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range and 81 percent (13-of-16) from the foul line. Cortland shot at a 41 percent clip overall and 38 percent (14-of-37) from the three-point arc.
Cortland trailed 35-25 with 6:34 left in the first half, but went on a 13-2 run to take a 38-37 lead with just under a minute left. A McIntosh three-pointer gave Plattsburgh a 40-38 halftime lead.
Cortland held three one-point leads in the second half, the last at 69-68 on a Lamard Herron (Westbury) driving layup with 5:07 left. Chris Manning's jumper 16 seconds later put the Cardinals ahead for good, but the Red Dragons were still down only 75-74 with 1:16 left after a Brian Manning three-pointer.
Plattsburgh missed a shot on its next possession, but Smith's potential go-ahead three-pointer just missed the mark with 43 seconds left. McIntosh hit two free throws to push the lead to three, and Chris Manning's steal in the backcourt gave Plattsburgh the ball back with 30 seconds left. He was fouled and hit 1-of-2 foul shots to put the Cardinals ahead by four.
Smith buried a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to once again pull Cortland within a point at 78-77. McIntosh answered with two foul shots with 19 seconds left. The Red Dragons tried to score a quick two-point basket, but Winter's driving layup was blocked out of bounds by Williams with eight seconds left. Cortland's last chance to tie fell short when Plattsburgh pressured Smith into a long three-pointer that didn't reach the rim right before the final buzzer.
Cortland will wrap up the regular season Saturday, Feb. 16, at Potsdam at 4 p.m.
