BOX SCORE
Williamsport, Pa. (Nov. 28, 2012) – Alvernia University (1-1, 0-1) turned a steal into a fastbreak layup and pulled within two points, 60-58 with five minutes left to play, but Lycoming College (4-1, 1-0) scored 15 of the last 19 for a 75-62 win Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Lamade Gymnasium.
Junior Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) led the Crusaders for the second straight game with 17 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) and Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) both added double-doubles for the Crusaders.
Lycoming scored the first six points of the game and never trailed. The first half lead was as many as 11 points, but Alvernia cut that down to one, 29-28 on a pair of free throws from Josh Vargas (Allentown, Pa./Faith Christian Academy) with 3:24 to go in the half.
The Crusaders had a shot to tie the scored before the break with a 3 in the air from sophomore Steve Schneider (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South), but it was off the mark and Lycoming doubled the lead to six, 36-30 when Chris Foreman hit a 3 in front of the first-half horn.
Alvernia opened the second half with the first five points and finally tied the game at 45-all on a Bennett jumper with 11:43 to go, but Lycoming continued to have the answer scoring four straight to break the tie punctuated by an Anthony Martin dunk.
Bennett hit a 3 to pull back within one then missed a 3 with a chance to take the lead. The junior guard was 3-for-11 from behind the arc after going 4-for-5 from the same range in the opener at Delaware Valley last week.
The Warriors scored nine straight after Parker scored the fastbreak layup to pull within two then hit six free throws in the final minute-plus to stay comfortably ahead.
Parker finished with 10 points and 15 boards. Bridgers went for 10 and 10.
Alvernia continues the road schedule with a big match at 5-0 Albright on Saturday. The Lions opened the Commonwealth season with a 83-72 win at Arcadia Wednesday.
