BOX SCORE
Alvernia University defeated the Lancaster Bible College Chargers (0-6) Saturday afternoon by a score of 74-38 in non-conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center. The game marked Alvernia's first at home for the 2012-13 campaign. With the win the Crusaders move to 3-1 on the year. Senior Josh Vargas (Allentown, Pa. / Faith Christian Academy) led the way with 15 points and two assists while junior Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa. / Chichester ) ripped down 11 rebounds, six coming off the offensive glass.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 27-point first half lead and never looked back.
They shot 42 percent from the field including a 6-for-22 effort from the 3-point line. Vargas hit two out of six from the arc and junior Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) hit 2-of-3 downtown.
Sophomore center Harrison Deyo (Phoenxville, Pa. / Phoenxville Area) played just 18 minutes but racked up 10 points and five rebounds establishing a presence in the paint with one block and one impressive goaltend.
Alvernia moved the ball efficiently as its guards did well to find open lanes and create offensive opportunities. They also cashed in on 26 points off their bench.
Crusader head coach, Mike Miller said, "What I'm most happy about is team defense. Holding them to 20 points at the half is way below average. More assists then turnovers in a game shows we're sharing the ball. Now we have to go get ready for league play."
Alvernia, 1-1 in two road, conference games, opens its home conference schedule when it hosts Stevenson University on Wednesday night. The game is part of a men's/women's doubleheader as the men take the court at 6:00 p.m. followed by the women at 8:00.
